Asbury Park Krampus Parade
December 5, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree
Visit downtown Asbury Park on December 5th for a most unusual way to start the holiday season: a traditional Krampus parade!
Who is Krampus? Here’s Wikipedia’s take on the legend. Basically, Santa rewards you at Christmas if you are good; Krampus punishes you if you are bad. He is an important figure in Germanic folklore. He is said to roam the streets in early December in search of naughty children. Krampus carries a handful of birch sticks for correcting disobedient youngsters, carrying off the most unruly to the underworld in a sack.
Traditional parades in which young men dress as Krampus occur annually in some Alpine towns, with participants donning masks and clanging bells in a parade known as Krampuslauf. Now Asbury Park brings the tradition to New Jersey.
Backward Glances will be joining other Asbury Park merchants in the celebration, with festive street vending. Look for our rack of Christmas sweaters and other fun holiday merchandise on Cookman Avenue while you await the arrival of Krampus!
