FreeIt’s time for Krampus 2016!
Asbury Park will be holding its 2nd annual Krampus event this week, and Backward Glances will be part of the tales of Krampus 2016 storytelling walking tour taking place between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m, starting at Paranormal Books & Curiosities, 627 Cookman Avenue. Look for Backward Glances’ psychedelic Krampus mask in our window!
Who is Krampus? Here’s Wikipedia’s take on the legend. Basically, Santa rewards you at Christmas if you are good; Krampus punishes you if you are bad. He is an important figure in Germanic folklore. He is said to roam the streets in early December in search of naughty children. Krampus carries a handful of birch sticks for correcting disobedient youngsters, carrying off the most unruly to the underworld in a sack.
Traditional parades in which young men dress as Krampus occur annually in some Alpine towns, with participants donning masks and clanging bells in a parade known as Krampuslauf. Once again, Asbury Park brings this tradition to New Jersey.
